We have some 6 miles of prime trout and grayling fishing, extending upstream from just below Tanfield Weir. Virtually all of our stretch may be fished from both banks and the river has an excellent variety of runs, pools, riffles and glides, just perfect for all traditional fly fishing techniques particularly using dry or wet flies. Each stretch provides an interesting challenge and makes the fly fishing here amongst the best that Yorkshire has to offer. Tanfield Angling Club (TAC) was founded in 1892
We have diploid trout only. Many caught are over 2lb with the occasional fish even exceeding 5lb. The head of graying also provides excellent angling.
Our experienced full time river keeper is possibly the only one employed by an Yorkshire angling club. His role is broad-ranging and essential for ensuring excellent fishing for all members and guests.
Our limited membership size, assures solitude in a wild environment for those that want it along with a high expectation of catching good sized fish.
Most of our current members joined having been in other clubs, as they welcomed the opportunity of excellent but challenging fly fishing in this beautiful natural environment. The angling is further enhanced by the good sized brown trout population.
The river has been rated as being in good condition despite the spates that can occur as in all northern rivers.
We welcome enquiries about membership.
